University of Vermont Medical Center has multiple English language learning programs to reduce barriers to employment and create more opportunities for career advancement.

Xi Chen is one participant in the programs. She settled in Vermont after fleeing Burundi, a nation in crisis. Chen did not speak English when she arrived in Vermont, but eventually landed a job in environmental services at UVM Medical Center. She signed up for one of the hospital’s English language training programs, earning a licensed nurse assistant certification.

Chen is currently enrolled in UVM Medical Center’s Registered Nurse Pathway Program, which provides her the support she needs to work towards obtaining her registered nursing degree.
